Tomás has traveled with his family from Texas all the way to Iowa to find farm work. He is haunted by memories of a teacher at his old school who punished him for speaking Spanish. One day, Tomás discovers the public library, where the Library Lady introduces him to the wonderful world of books. Soon he is teaching the Library Lady some Spanish while he becomes more confident with English, and finds he is no longer afraid. Presented by Childsplay.

Based on the true story of the Mexican American author and educator Tomás Rivera, a child of migrant workers who went on to become a chancellor of the University of California system. This inspiring story reminds us what libraries—and education—can make possible.
