On February 9, 2017 the radio and podcast, On Being with Krista Tippett, featured Alain de Botton and “The True Hard Work of Love and Relationships”

What if the first question we asked on a date were, “How are you crazy? I’m crazy like this.”? Philosopher and writer Alain de Botton’s essay “Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person” was, amazingly, the most-read article in The New York Times in the news-drenched year of 2016. As people and as a culture, he says, we would be much saner and happier if we reexamined our very view of love. How might our relationships be different — and better — if we understood that the real work of love is not in the falling, but in what comes after?

The creative research for What Would Love Do? started with each performer interviewing someone they didn’t know with Botton’s question “How are you crazy?” After the interviews, each performer was directed to embody their partner’s answer while their partner witnessed and asked themselves, “What Would Love Do?” As the witnessing partner responded to their “crazy,” not with words, but with actions, the interplay between witnessing and embodying developed into duets. Music, a painting, a balloon, a dog, a mother with her children, and Contact Improvisation techniques with collective and collaborative choreography augment the original duet material. What Would Love Do? is a devised dance performance examining both lived and imagined experiences of love and relationships -- within, after, and without the falling.
